Stonehenge
Stonehenge needs no introduction. It is known throughout the world as a prehistoric monument of unique importance. It is a World Heritage Site surrounded by remains of ceremonial and domestic structures. Stonehenge in its present form dates back to about 4000 years ago. The earliest part of the site dates back to around 3000 BC.

What makes Stonehenge remarkable is the circle of thirty seven sarsen pillars capped by a ring of thirty lintels. However, today, only seventeen of the uprights and six lintels are still in place.
We tend to know more about the meaning of Stonehenge than we do about Avebury. Stonehenge is a temple and all temples are about invoking a particular God. The solar and lunar orientations identify it as a temple to the sun and moon. The sunrises and sunsets have particular importance at the Summer and Winter Solstices. There are numerous theories and much history about Stonehenge, too much to go into in depth on these pages.

We will tell you about the significance of the ‘Heel Stone’ as well as interesting facts about the origin and transport of the Stones.
